Church history

New Jerusalem Baptist Church was founded and officially organized in 1946. Its founder was the late Rev. J. R. Chandler. The church was founded on love and determination, both of which are still intricate parts of the church today.

Four pastors have served New Jerusalem, including its founder. They are Rev. Chandler ('46 - '6 1). With the passing of our founder in 1961, the late Reverends
H. Legrant and  Haywood J. Holiday served as co-interim pastors until the congregation elected  Rev. Haywood James Holiday as pastor ('61 - '64).  He served for two terms.  On Sunday April 10, 1964,  Rev. I. C. Mullins ('64 - '78) was elected as our third Pastor. Currently we are abundantly blessed by our present pastor Rev. Samuel J. Cornelius ('79 - Present).  Each man did his part in leading God's people to higher heights.

The church has been very active in the community. Under Rev. Cornelius' leadership many outreach programs have evolved. A prison ministry, a "Feed My Sheep Program, " a rap session and an intense missionary program have all been a part of Rev. Cornelius' Mission for New Jerusalem.

From its humble beginnings in a house, New Jerusalem has emerged as a two part building today . It consists of the edifice built in 1951, which is currently our chapel, under the leadership of our founder, the late Rev. J.R. Chandler.  Since that time our magnificent structure built in 1991 - 92 under the leadership of Rev. Cornelius is our main sanctuary.

God has continuously blessed us and phase two of our pastor's vision has been completed in which a new wing was added to the main edifice.  This new addition to the church added five classrooms, a new conference room, four restrooms and additional seating for 400 parishioners.  This wing was completed in January of 2002 and will be dedicated in April 2002.

As a church family we pledge to grow in grace and fellowship and to study to show ourselves approved to God.  To this end we dedicate the month of August for Christian Education and training.  With teaching and training each afternoon.  Additional training is available in the "Learning Institute" sponsored by the Christian Educational Department.  This is a week long teaching workshop in the month of October.

We are a church of profound love and fellowship and we are excited to behold good sound doctrine through the preached word and teaching.  To name but a few more teaching ministries would include, Vacation Bible  School during the month of June; Rap Session which is open to the public and held every other Tuesday, so bring your questions and concerns; and Baptist Training Union which prepares us for our Christian walk by teaching us biblical principals and Baptist mandates.

The members thank God for "50 Years of Grace". To God be the glory.
